Membership in Beth Shalom
All members of the Jewish faith are eligible for membership at Beth
Shalom. In accordance with Jewish tradition we understand someone to
be Jewish if they have a Jewish mother, or if they have converted to
Judaism (Giur) under the supervision of a rabbinical court (Beit
Din).
We erzourage women or men who have a Jewish father, but no Jewish
mother,
to become supporting members of Beth Shalom. After a period of
study, culminating in a 'Confirmation of Jewish Status' by a Beit
Din, these supporting members may become full members of the
congregation.
At Beth Shalom non-Jewish family members are included in all aspects
of community life, including religious services. Only full members
may be called to the Torah or entrusted with other religious
functions.
Children with a non-Jewish parent may take part in religious
education classes, providing they have the support of both parents.
The non-Jewish parent must declare his/her intention to raise the
child in the Jewish faith. If a child with a non-Jewish mother
wishes to have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, he/she is required to confirm
his/her Jewish status with a Beit Din prior to the Bar/Bat Mitzvah. |
